The topic that I've chosen to base my research paper on is the Sexual Objectification of Women in Media and Advertisement in the last decade, and the negative effects that it has on teenage girls and young women.I chose this topic because I wrote a paper in my English 101 class based on women's rights and the modern day oppression of women. I would like to go more in depth into this topic to learn why sexual objectification of women was so rampant in TV/Film/Magazines between the years of 2000-2010. I would also like to research statistics on teenage girls and young women who have under gone plastic surgery or any body image reconstruction between the years of 2000-2010. During my research I would like to compare advertisement and marketing strategies used by corporations in the 1990's compared to the new millennium.
There are many questions that I want to keep in mind when doing my research. I would like to focus on why sexual images are used to sell products, whether or not the product itself has anything to do with sex. I would also like to research the growing number of Television programs in the past 10 years that have included sexual objectification of women. When watching TV or flipping through a magazine some of the advertisements depict women in such a poor manner.I would like to also find out why sexual objectification towards women is so acceptable in the United States? In regards to TV/Film why does the FCC not have stricter guidelines as to what is considered sexually inappropriate.
TV/Film/Media have completely shifted compared to the 1990's. In the new millennium sexual objectification has been the "it" thing and it seems that the issue is growing stronger. I want to focus on why young women and teenage girls adapt to what they see in the Media. Why are advertisement agencies not putting out more positive images for young women to see? When doing my research I will look for articles from the academic research complete database pertaining to Sexual Oppression against women. I will also look for books that discuss marketing/ advertising strategies used by corporations. I will also look for statistics pertaining to teenage girls and young women's self-esteem levels in the past 10 years.
I want to focus on why this issue is negatively effecting the youth and why not much is being done to change it. In the past women have worked really hard to gain respect and equal rights in the United States. Does the sexual objectification of women in media and advertisements set women back, or let them express their sexual freedom?
